Chata, Patacha or Rasca Águeda
Bateiras - traditional vessels - which, even today, are found on the banks (and bed) of the Pateira lagoon, the Cértima, Águeda and Vouga rivers. The bateira can also be called “patacha”, “chata”, “lancha”, “rasca” or Caçadeira.
It only has one side board, making it very low. The bottom of the bateira typical of this region is flat, and its construction is typically made with pine wood and using artisanal techniques.
Its very primitive shape leads us to believe that we are facing the oldest model, from which all the others would have evolved. It is a very simple vessel and was probably one of the first to cross rivers, long before the formation of the lagoon.
Not having fixed dimensions, it was made to the “taste” of whoever ordered it and taking into account the task for which it was intended, such as: crossing people or livestock, collecting and transporting moliço, fishing, hunting and recreation.
With sharp ends, fusiform, with a bench in the middle that fixes the curvature of the side plank, it is moved exclusively by the pole by a boatman, a man who maneuvers the vessel with skill both in the lagoon and rivers, and in the floodplains of the surrounding fields when flooded.
